Another of those (not so) rare Polish thunderstorms was in full force as we arrived in Gdansk. We pulled up late evening outside the home of our Polish friends, where we were going to spend a couple of days camping in a parking lot to the side of their apartment. The rain was so heavy, just getting from the van to their front door was a drenching experience. The weather conditions made manoeuvring the van very challenging, in despair we left the van parked on the street and hoped no one would crash into us during the night.
We had become friends with Iza and Darius when they lived in Oxford. Darius, an architect, worked with Graeme in Eynsham. Since that time their family has increased by two gorgeous little boys, Alex and Albert. After a tasty supper of local fish, lots of reminiscing and the odd glass or two of wine we weaved our way to our roadside bed.
The morning found the van intact and the sun shining. In such clear conditions the van was soon moved off the road and several loads of washing were moved out of the van and into the apartment. Graeme had been suffering from toothache for a few days and Iza, who seems to have lots of contacts, called her dentist friend and Graeme was whisked off clutching his jaw to seek relief. A root canal and another load of washing later and we were ready to seek the delights of Gdansk. Darius and Iza are fortunate to live close to the beach, so a walk along the long sandy beach followed by an evening of food and wine in a delightful beachside café, with sand castle construction and a paddle in the sea thrown in, was just the delight required.
