North Sea Gas

Despite Norway’s huge North Sea resource finding garages which supply propane gas (LPG) is problematic. Using LPG for our cooking and heating we had easily been able to kept it topped up in Holland & Denmark but with few stations selling it in Norway, the gas indicator in the red zone and a planned route to the Arctic Circle, desperation was beginning to creep in. The internet had provided directions for a few places that either didn’t exist or had closed down and although comforted that we had three duvets and a barbeque our search became determined. Several miles outside Bergen we saw a hand written sign advertising propane gas for sale. We turned off the main road and following more hand written signs we eventually found ourselves in a deserted, area with a single, small stall in the middle of this derelict landscape. Checking it out we found a pump that did indeed sell propane gas, instructions in English, and a slot for your credit card. It all seemed rather dubious but despair led us to place our faith in this machine. With the credit card happily accepted the gas tank was filled and a receipt produced. Driving away we noticed another sign advertising diesel at 30% cheaper than we had been paying. Following the sign, we found another solitary pump and went through the same process once again. Having filled all supplies we knew the duvets and barbeque were safe in the hold for a little longer.
