The Annual Flower Festival

Having been told that the annual festival of flowers was to take place the next day we went to the station and bought train tickets to Sassenheim, a small town outside of The Hague and one of the places the floral floats would be passing through.
The floats move from town to town over a period of two days ending in Haarlem on the Saturday night. This is Holland’s primary bulb growing area and as we drove north (later in the tour) we passed fields ablaze with colourful stripes of tulips all in full bloom. Cycling to the station the next day we left our bikes in the overwhelmingly packed bike park outside the station and hoped we would find them on our return. The train to Sassenheim was not as busy as we had expected and on arriving the town seemed to have little to offer other than to wait for the procession. The floats eventually arrived and the whole procession took about an hour to pass by. The theme for the 2016 festival was ‘Designer Fashion’. Some floats had taken more note of the theme than others whist certain floats had either ignored the theme or were at the wrong festival. You can see more of the amazing creations on the photo page.
On returning to The Hague and after a long search for our bikes, we revisited the Mauritshuis for one last time and cycled back to the campsite to prepare to leave for Amsterdam the next day.
