Plovers & Lovers

We spent five peaceful days in Friesland mostly sunny, generally relaxed and always windy; not surprising there are so many windmills. Cycle tracks crisscross the whole of this area, you can cycle for miles without seeing another person. Although flat, the landscape is beautiful with big skies and colourful horizons. The birdlife is abundant and a delight to sit and watch. On one trip, a windy cold day, we took a wrong turn and found ourselves on an even more remote track than usual, no one around except us and the occasional tumbling plover. We rounded a corner to find a couple, who, obviously, thinking they had found a secluded spot were doing their utmost to keep warm. Not in their wildest dreams (and judging by their efforts to keep the cold out, their dreams were pretty wild) did they expect a couple of Brits to cycle by. We smiled and said ‘Hoi’ but they didn’t respond!
