Last days in Denmark

On the IMG_20160513_133510 advice of the site owner we didn’t leave Denmark via the Oresund bridge but instead drove up to Heliborg  to spend the last couple of days on the east coast. This turned out to be beautiful and eventful.

Trying to get out of Copenhagen was our first  problem. The road signs were not entirely consistent and after an hour, we felt very “Hotel California” as we didn’t seem to be able to leave. Eventually we found a route out more by following the direction of the sun than the road signs. An hour later we were set up in a campsite close to the coast in Niva.

Our last day in Demark saw us taking the cycle track along the coast to Helsingor. It is a pretty route going through attractive marine villages, many with original fisherman’s cottages, fish stalls, restaurants and empty beaches. We had our lunch in the harbour of Helsingor before visiting Kronborg Slot, the 15thcentury castle which overlooks the harbour and is allegedly Hamlet’s Castle of Elsinore. The castle takes its Shakespearean connections very seriously and Hamlet is performed annually at a festival held each August. There is a picture gallery of many of the actors who have played Hamlet in the castle including a very young Richard Burton in 1954.

The sun shining as we left the Castle and all was well with the world…….. how things can change!!
