Dijks & Polders

The campsite in Oudega was by a huge sailing lake and some mornings we would take our tea and sit by the lake watching the sun and the birds play on the water. Life is very simple in a van. I don’t think I have written a list since leaving UK which was pretty much a way of life for me at work and home. Even shopping lists are none existent for the few things you need. You do need a degree of organisation especially when putting things away. It is amazing that in such a small space you can actually mislay items.
Our last day in Oudega was spent on the bikes. We cycled 25 miles and reached Hindeloopen, a town on the edges of the inland sea, IJsselmere, created by the building of a 32km dijk (not a typo I use the Dutch spelling). The roads occasionally run out at a river’s edge and there, miraculously is a ferry is waiting to take you to the other side. We crossed two rivers that day via the ferry, it’s a charming additions to the day’s journey and costs just 1 euro. The efforts in keeping the land reclaimed are most evident in this part of Holland and dredging equipment was very much part of this landscape of dijks and polders
