The Atlantic Road

DSCF3225One of the most impressive aspects of Norway is the highway engineering. Long tunnels hewn out of granite mountains and extensive bridges linking islands and towns are ubiquitous along the Norwegian roads. This combination of extreme engineering and architecture is no better demonstrated than along an exciting,  five-mile stretch of Road 64, known as the Atlantic Road. Declared by the Guardian (in 2006) as the world’s best road trip in the world, eight bridges twist and curve like sea serpents connecting the islands situated to the south of Kristiansund. On stormy days the Atlantic waves pound against the bridge piles adding to the impact of this exhilarating and scenic drive. Fortunately, the weather was fine and the sea calm so the levels of that kind of adrenalin rush, whilst driving, were kept to a minimum.
