The Geiranger Fjord is claimed to be the most beautiful of all the Norwegian fjords. The access to it is remote, secreted away in the Sunmore Mountains, requiring a day’s bus trip from Alesund. The day was very misty making the landscape wonderfully atmospheric. We climbed up through snow-capped mountains before making our decent to the beginning of the Fjord which, by the time we arrived was bathed in sunshine. The Geiranger is one of the narrowest fjords and the scale of the mountains to the width of the fjord provided a spectacular and picturesque journey. All along the fjord, waterfalls cascaded from the mountain top culminating in an amazing finale known as De Syv Sostre (The Seven Sisters). The reflection of the mountains in the still waters and the sun glowing through the mist as we approached the end of the fjord and the town of Geiranger was quite magical. Sadly, the same could not be said for the town of Geiranger. In its attempt to cater for the masses of tourist, cruise ships and buses that pass through this small town, it was crammed with cheap looking souvenir shops and expensive cafes. Despite this, we both thought the amazing trip along the Geirangerfjord well deserved the assertion of being one of the most beautiful fjords in Norway.
