Our first destination in France was Ronchamps. This was on Graeme’s to see list for its 20th Century church designed by Le Corbusier. The church was close to the campsite but at the top of a very steep hill which even with electric bikes was tough going. Once the breathing had resumed to normality and the face faded to a gentle pink we walked around this very modern building which had a cave like quality inside. I was disappointed that the grounds looked so unkempt and overgrown. I thought monasteries were supposed to be self sufficient, growing their own vegetables and fruits; what were the incumbents doing with their time? The incumbents, it transpired, were half a dozen nuns who all looked as if they had all seen their ninetieth birthday……some time ago!
